As you enjoy the warming temperatures and blooming flowers, you might be cleaning out your garage or organizing your closets. There isn\u2019t any better time than now to give your smile a spring cleaning, too. Here\u2019s how to give your mouth a thorough cleaning for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gvdentalmarion.com\/preventive-dentistry.html\">healthy teeth and gums<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Change Your Toothbrush<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your toothbrush is your most used product to keep your teeth and gums healthy. It removes food residue and plaque to lower your risk of cavities and gum disease. Your toothbrush gets a lot of use, which leads to wear and tear. Worn bristles won\u2019t clean your teeth effectively.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends changing your toothbrush every 2-3 months or when worn, whichever comes first. Besides limiting sugars and starches, improving your oral hygiene routine can keep cavities at bay.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ADA recommends brushing at least twice a day, but it\u2019s best to brush after every meal to remove food residue. You\u2019ll keep your enamel strong and healthy. You\u2019ll also prevent bad breath by removing bacteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Floss Your Teeth Daily<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your toothbrush is effective, but it can\u2019t reach everywhere in your mouth, like between teeth. Brushing alone leaves up to 40% of your teeth surfaces uncleaned, increasing your risk of gum disease.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 50% of adults have a form of the infection. Gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss and can increase your risk of many health problems, including Alzheimer\u2019s, heart disease, and diabetic complications. Daily flossing is the best way to keep your gums healthy. Even if it feels like a chore, floss every day to keep your mouth and body healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Schedule a Cleaning and Checkup<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Brushing and flossing are effective, but you should visit a dentist every 6 months to keep your mouth clean and healthy. Your dental team will remove plaque and tartar you can\u2019t reach at home. They will clean and polish your teeth to ensure your smile looks its best.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your dentist will monitor your dental health to detect anything concerning while it is still small.
